Jay's cognitive impairment has suddenly gotten worse. The last few days have been very confusing for him. He thought we were in New Orleans and worried about getting back; he doesn't think this is his home; he worries about getting all his things back from the "real house" in Dallas. Last evening around 8 o'clock, I took him for a ride around the neighborhood - including Arapahoe and Keller Springs - and he was able to pick out our house. However, in a few minutes he was confused again. I gave him all his meds and got him to bed around 9:30. This morning when I went to see how he was, he was dressed and said he'd called the police because he wanted to leave. I check the phone log and it didn't show such a call. However, two police officers showed up. He mentioned to them having been in a hotel in Indonesia and just wanted to leave but couldn't. The male officer was very kind and gentle with him, and the female officer put me at ease, saying they deal with this sort of thing all the time. She asked if he had access to a car - I said he did - she said that has to stop as he could hurt himself or others. After they left, I told him about access to the car and explained it would just be until his cognition un-skewed. He said he was good with that. We see Dr. Flippo tomorrow morning and she'll be brought up to date. But she's an Oncologist and I don't know what, if anything, she can do about it. Advice might be all. Evenings are very bad for him - it's called "sundowners" syndrome and amazingly, it's spot on!
Right now, at a little past 8 am, he's drinking his coffee and watching TV. He told me he feels as if he hasn't eaten in days but isn't hungry. I told him he had waffles and bacon for breakfast yesterday and 3 slices of pizza for dinner. He said "you were the one who gave me waffles." He's worried about other people living here but I tried to explain hopefully successfully that it was just the two of us.
Steve might have some advice when he comes for dinner this evening.
